Just a Thought- On The Cabinet Shuffle

A busy day in politics as Trudeau does a mini shuffle. Some moves were surprising, some not so much.

Kicking O’Regan out of Veterans Affairs was simply a survival move, IE save Trudeau’s buddy and put him somewhere else and hope he doesn’t screw up there as well. Personally, I think he will be just as bad in his new portfolio at Indigenous Affairs. The real question is why put a screw-up in charge of a very sensitive department?

Philpott was moved from Indigenous Affairs where she seemed to be doing quite well. One can understand the need to have a good minister at Treasury Board, but a person of her caliber could have been used elsewhere. It seems like a bit of overkill unless the PMO gang need a very capable minister in that role to handle anticipated damage and fall out from the Vice Admiral Norman court case which will be coming up right around the time of the next election. I think he should have put Philpott in the environment portfolio- one that needs a minister who can actually get things done and one of the most important portfolios if not the most important one for the Liberals in the next election.

Hard to say why he moved the Justice Minister (Wilson-Raybould) to Veterans Affairs, but at least she can’t do worse there than O’Regan and her move allows a pretty competent Parliamentary Secretary (Lametti) to move up to the Justice portfolio.

Bernadette Jordan goes to a new portfolio - Rural Economic Development. Really, this sounds like one created to impress rural ridings leading up to the next election. In the past most of these economic development portfolios were an excuse to provide representation from some provinces and an excuse to hand out cheques with lots of media fanfare- something the Liberals will need this year.

Another day on the Hill and another cabinet shuffle is over. History will judge if Butts and Trudeau got it right.

"Hard to say why he moved the Justice Minister (Wilson-Raybould) to Veterans Affairs,"

Maybe it was her gross mishandling of that case ( Coulton Fourshie?) where she did everything but come right out and call the farmer a murderer (after he was acquitted, of course). Apparently she believes that 'justice' is only achieved when the jury returns the politically expediently verdict.

W-R failed to cover Juniors back and make sure he would not get ambushed by the indigenous when he ventured into hostile territory....the Natives are restless and not happy ....Reconcilliation seems to be falling flat on its ass and Tillie from Kamloops' humilliating treatment of the boy wonder appears to be the straw that broke sunny ways' back...

Jody Wilson-Reybould more or less got a demotion and I cannot see this going over well with the First Nations and this could hurt Trudeau in some Northern ridings. While no fan of the Trudeau government, I thought Wilson-Reybould was one of the better cabinet ministers while putting O'Regan who was one of the worst (along with Morneau, Joly, Monsef, and McKenna) in Indigenous affairs is an insult. I heard from Warren Kinsella the reason she got the demotion is she was one of the few cabinet ministers willing to challenge Trudeau from time to time rather than be a yes women to him. She is also way more qualified than he is in terms of her resume.

Don Martin at CTV claims the whole cabinet shuffle was to put Wilson_Raybould in her place. Seems she isn't quite as sycophantic as Trudeau likes.
The Chief of the B.C. First Nations has called Trudeau out on this one, but over at the G&M their headline states that no one is upset with Trudeau over the demotion given to W-R.

Today's headline at NN states that Bill Blair intends to table new legislation on seizure of handguns within a few days, despite that the head of the Toronto Police Services has said the move will be utterly useless.

Trudeau's Cabinet suffers from an extreme lack of ability, shuffling this Cabinet is like shuffling a deck short any face cards.
